Water is spraying or pouring through a ceiling

You have minutes, not hours. Each minute a half-inch line runs at household pressure sends a lot of water into your building, so the shutoff comes before the phone call. The 24/7 line stays open all night and on holidays, and once the water is off, we book the earliest visit we can with same-day appointments when available.

Do the first four steps below in order, even if the phone is in your hand.

Do this before anything else

  1. Close the main shutoff valve. It is commonly near the front hose bib, in the garage or at the meter. Turn it clockwise until firm. A lever type closes a quarter turn.
  2. Open the lowest faucet in the house and flush a toilet once, to drain the pipes and drop the pressure.
  3. If water is near outlets, light fixtures or the electrical panel, turn off the breakers for that area from a dry spot. If you must wade to reach the panel, do not. Wait for help.
  4. Turn off the water heater. A gas unit goes to pilot, an electric unit gets its breaker switched off. Heating an empty tank damages it.

What a burst pipe repair actually involves

Burst pipe repair is the work of locating the failed section, cutting it out, replacing it with sound pipe and fittings, and pressure testing the line before the wall is closed. The speed of the first part depends on whether the break is visible or hidden behind drywall.

Once the water is off, we confirm what failed and why. A single split in a good line is a spot repair. Multiple failures point to a bigger issue, covered below.

Repairs on supply piping fall under the California Plumbing Code, which is based on the Uniform Plumbing Code (UPC), so a replaced section has to use approved pipe, fittings and supports rather than whatever happens to fit.

Why pipes burst: copper, PEX and galvanized

The material tells us a lot about the cause. Here is what we see most often.

Pipe typeHow it usually failsWhat the break looks likeTypical repair
CopperPinhole pitting from inside, erosion near fittings, or a joint failing under pressure or movement.A fine spray, green staining or a small wet spot that widens.Cut out the section, install a new length and fittings, and test.
PEXFitting failure, a pipe nicked or kinked during install, UV damage when left in sunlight, or freezing.A split along the pipe or a weeping crimp ring.Replace the affected run with new PEX and the right connectors.
Galvanized steelThe inside scales shut and the wall rusts thin. It fails at threaded joints and bends.Rusty drips, a sudden blowout at a joint, or low flow before the break.Replace the section, and consider replacing the line, since the rest is in similar shape.

When a second leak follows within months, we talk about whole-home repiping, because the pipe is wearing out everywhere, not in one place.

Not sure it is a burst? Signs of a broken line

  • Sudden loss of pressure

The shower dribbles and the washing machine fills slowly. A burst downstream steals pressure from everything else.

  • Water stain spreading on a ceiling

A dark, growing patch, sometimes with a bulge, means water is pooled above. Place a bucket and keep clear of the sagging section.

  • Noise behind the wall

Rushing, hissing or hammering when taps are closed is a clue the pipe has split.

  • Running meter with taps closed

The low-flow indicator moves even after you closed everything. See our leak detection page if you cannot see the source.

Document the damage for your insurer

Insurance companies usually want evidence of a sudden break and of the damage it caused. A few minutes of record keeping while you wait for us makes the claim simpler.

  1. 1

    Photograph and film

Take wide shots of each affected room, then close-ups of the water source, damaged ceilings, floors and belongings. Add a short video that pans across the area.

  2. 2

    Record the time and details

Write down when you discovered it, when you closed the main and what you saw. Include the meter reading.

  3. 3

    Keep the broken part

Ask us to hand over the failed section of pipe or fitting. Adjusters sometimes ask for it, and it shows the cause.

  4. 4

    Save every record

Keep our written findings, invoices and receipts for emergency drying or cleanup. Call your insurer promptly, and ask what they need before you toss damaged items.

Water is off but the wall is soaked?

We open the minimum, find the break and give a clear price before repair starts.

After the repair: what happens next to your house

Stopping the leak is the plumbing. Drying is the second job, and it should start quickly.

Drying and moisture checks

Wet drywall and insulation need to be dried or removed within a short period or mold can grow. A drying contractor uses fans and dehumidifiers. We can mark where we cut and where water traveled.

Repair or replace the rest

If the burst came from old galvanized or tired copper, ask whether the rest is going to follow. A sound line gets a spot fix. A tired line is a case for water line repair or full replacement.

What affects the cost of burst pipe repair

Where the pipe is

An exposed pipe in a garage is faster than one in a finished wall or ceiling.

Pipe type and size

Copper, PEX and galvanized each take different tools and fittings.

How much of the line must be replaced

Some breaks are one fitting. Others expose a long run of weak pipe.

Time of the call

After-hours work is real work, and your quote will say what is included.

Access and finish work

Opening and patching drywall is separate. We itemize it.

Many homeowner policies cover sudden burst damage but not slow seepage or wear. Ask your insurer what applies and keep every photo and record.

Manhattan Beach note

Finding your shutoff in Manhattan Beach

Every house is laid out differently, whether it sits on a Hill Section slope or a flat lot near the Strand, so find the main shutoff before you need it. Look for it now, tag it and show everyone in the house.

Salt air can speed up corrosion on exposed fittings and valve handles near the coast, so a handle that has not been turned in years may stick. Exercise it a quarter turn each spring. If it does not close, tell us and we will replace it. Also see our Redondo Beach service area for neighbors a short drive away.

FAQs

Burst pipe questions

Yes. Our dispatch line answers 24/7. Close the main first, then call, and we will help you through the next steps and book the earliest visit we can, with same-day appointments when available.

Common places are near the front hose bib, in the garage, along the side of the house or at the meter box. If you cannot find it, tell us during the call.

A pipe repair clamp can slow a small leak on a straight, accessible section. It is a stopgap. Water off is the safe answer.

Policies often cover sudden burst damage but may not cover wear or a slow leak. Ask your insurer before work and keep every record.

Most breaks here come from corrosion, high pressure, fatigue at fittings or a defective joint. Freezing is a rare cause here, but it can split an exposed line in an unusual cold snap.

Not always. One split in an otherwise good line is a spot repair. Multiple failures or galvanized pipe suggest replacement.
