Hermosa Beach, CA 90254
Emergency plumbing in a town 15 blocks wide
An emergency plumber in Hermosa Beach works in very little space. The city covers about 1.42 square miles and 19,728 people live in it, so water that escapes a pipe tends to find a neighbor's wall, a shared fence line or the street. With emergency dispatch available around the clock, a licensed plumber can be sent to any address in 90254, whether the trouble starts at noon or at 3 a.m.
The town runs about 15 blocks east to west and 40 north to south, with Pacific Coast Highway through the middle. That grid helps you on the phone. Give us the cross street and say which side of PCH you are on, and we can plan where to park and which way to approach the building before we arrive.
Manhattan Beach sits directly north of Hermosa, and our office is on North Sepulveda Boulevard, so the drive down is a short one. A clear price comes before any work starts.
Work in Hermosa Beach follows the California Plumbing Code, which is based on the Uniform Plumbing Code (UPC), and the city's own building division decides what needs a permit, so ask them before a larger job.
What goes wrong first in a compact beach town
These are the problems that fill our Hermosa calls. If you recognize one, you are in the right place.
- Sand in the drains.
Rinse-off showers, garage floor drains and utility sinks collect fine sand that settles in the trap and builds a plug. The water drains slower each week until it stops. A drain cleaning visit with a cable or a hydro-jet nozzle clears it.
- Crusted faucets and weak showerheads.
White scale on aerators and a shower that sprays sideways point to mineral buildup from very hard water.
- A wet spot that keeps coming back.
Damp baseboards or a soft floor near an exterior wall usually mean a pinhole leak. Check the water meter with every fixture off. If the dial moves, water is escaping.
- Gurgling drains and a sewer smell.
When two fixtures gurgle together, the blockage is usually in the building's lateral rather than in one trap. Stop running water and call before the line backs up inside.
- A water heater weeping at the base.
A slow drip at the bottom of the tank means the tank wall has failed from inside. It will not seal itself, and it can let go all at once.
Match what you see to the first move
| What you see | Likely cause | Do this first | What we bring |
|---|---|---|---|
| Water pooling under the heater | Corroded tank or failed relief valve | Shut the cold supply to the heater and cut power or gas to it | Replacement tank, supply stops, a new expansion tank if the system needs one |
| Meter spins with everything off | Leak in the service line or slab | Close the main valve and note the meter reading | Acoustic ground microphone and a thermal camera |
| Every drain in the house is slow | Lateral blockage | Stop using water and flush nothing | Drain camera and a cable machine or hydro-jet nozzle |
| Spray from a wall or ceiling | Split fitting or burst supply line | Close the main and open a low faucet to relieve pressure | Pipe cutters, fittings and moisture meters |
| Dripping faucet with crusted fittings | Worn cartridge scaled by hard water | Close the supply stop under the sink | Matching cartridge or a new faucet body |
A split supply line floods a small lot quickly, so burst pipe repair always starts with the main valve.
Before we arrive: if you have a burst pipe or active leak
Three things to do in the first two minutes. They apply on a narrow Hermosa lot as well as anywhere.
Shut off the main valve
The main is usually where the service line enters the building or at the meter near the street. On a tight lot, check the side yard and the garage wall that faces the street.
Kill power to wet areas
Switch off breakers for any room with standing water, and stay off wet floors. Many beach-town water heaters sit in garages, where outlets and water share a small space. Keep children and pets away.
Call the 24/7 line
Have the cross street, your ZIP (90254) and the floor where the water is ready. If you are a few steps from Pier Avenue or the Strand, mention it, because parking there can be tight on weekends.
Water coming through a ceiling in Hermosa Beach?
One call reaches the 24/7 dispatch line, and a licensed plumber takes it from there.
What salt air, sand and hard water keep sending our way
Three services cover most of what Hermosa homeowners and landlords ask for.
Water heater repair
Scale from very hard water insulates the heating element and shortens tank life. Our water heater repair visits start with the anode rod, the thermostat and the relief valve.
Leak detection
Salt air eats at exposed fittings and valves near the coast, and small leaks hide behind finished walls. We pin them down with leak detection tools before any wall is opened.
Drain cleaning
Sand, grease and hair meet in the same traps. We run a camera down the line first so you see what the blockage is, then clear it.
Hermosa Beach note
Hermosa Beach water: Cal Water, two wells and imported supply
Cal Water's Hermosa-Redondo district serves Hermosa Beach, Redondo Beach and portions of Torrance. Its sources are two local groundwater wells plus surface water bought from the Metropolitan Water District. The groundwater is treated to remove iron and manganese and blended to reduce dissolved solids caused by seawater intrusion.
In its 2023 water quality report, Cal Water lists total hardness at 560 ppm for the groundwater and 81 to 153 ppm (average 124) for purchased MWD water. The report calls 300 ppm or higher very hard. Our conversion is roughly 33 grains per gallon for the groundwater and about 7.3 for the MWD average.
What that means in your house: scale builds faster in the water heater and on fixtures when the groundwater share is high. Cal Water only serves portions of some areas, so check which system serves your address. A water softener is worth pricing if scale keeps coming back.

Redondo Beach starts at Hermosa's southern and eastern edge, and our Redondo Beach emergency plumbers work from the same dispatch line. Heading north past Manhattan Beach, the same crews answer calls in El Segundo.

FAQs
Hermosa Beach emergency plumbing questions
Hermosa Beach has one ZIP code, 90254, and we cover all of it. That runs from the Strand and the pier on the west edge to the blocks along the Redondo Beach line, and from the Manhattan Beach border in the north to the south end of town.
Yes. The dispatch line is staffed 24/7, including nights, weekends and holidays. We send a licensed plumber when a pipe bursts, a drain backs up or a water heater fails. Same-day appointments are offered for less urgent work when the schedule allows.
Sewer rules differ by city, and we do not state Hermosa's rules for you. Ask the city public works department who maintains the main and where the owner's lateral begins. We can run a drain camera down your lateral to show what is blocking it.
Hard water leaves calcium and magnesium behind when it evaporates or heats up. Cal Water's 2023 report lists groundwater hardness at 560 ppm, which it classes as very hard. A softener, regular flushing of the water heater and replacing the anode rod on schedule all slow the buildup.
